Family Ministry Conversation & A Race to Nowhere

Join Us: Thursday, November 3rd – 9:00 AM PST

David C. Cook (the publishers of our curriculum) will be streaming the Family Ministry Conversation in Costa Mesa, CA, from the FMC facebook page on Thursday, November 3rd starting at 9:00 AM (PT).

In this conversation we will unpack spiritual formation, engage in innovative discussions, and speak practically on what spiritual formation looks like in both the home and the church.

You can also listen in using the Ustream app on your smart device and finding the “Family Ministry Conversation” channel.

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

Screening held at:

Folsom Lake College
10 College Parkway
Room FL3-173
Folsom, CA 95630

Jennifer Whitney: A Brief Goodbye

It seems we have had far too many goodbyes at Oak Hills of late.  Yet Saturday, we must once more say goodbye to a dear friend, Jennifer Whitney.  Jennifer Whitney was on the Children’s Ministries staff at Oak Hills for many years and loved the children and families of our community so well.  She has taught so many of us what it looks like to live life in the constant reality of God’s Kingdom: following Christ passionately, holding lightly to the things of this world, and finding laughter and joy in all circumstances.  Though I cannot bear to say goodbye to our sweet Jen, I know that she is enjoying a fond hello with her Savior and Lord and will one day greet us with her bright smile as she sings in

Eleanor Rigby (her OH nickname) Beatles’ fashion, “I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.”

A celebration of Jen’s life will be held at Oak Hills, Saturday, October 8th, at 11:00 a.m.  Join us for a brief goodbye looking forward to the eternal “HELLO.”

Awake My Soul

‎”In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die.
Where you invest your love, you invest your life.”

This song has been stuck in my head for the past few months and I’d like to share it with you all. It definitely applies to the past few months here at Oak Hills and Prime Time.

Here’s why we are so excited!!!

TRU STORY: A new spiritual formation curriculum 1st-8th grade.

Tru was written with the spiritual formation of children in mind.  This means helping kids build a life-long relationship with God, giving them a strong foundation in biblical knowledge, and being intentional about creating space for kids to encounter the living God. Through the process of spiritual formation, we desire children to open their hearts to God, learn His voice, have a desire to obey Him, and to do so in the power the Holy Spirit offers to each believer.

One exciting component this curriculum offers each week is The Big God Story. Bible stories are no longer isolated with Noah being the star one week and Abraham the next, but instead told in the context of the main story, where Jesus, the Redeemer, is elevated to his rightful place as Savior and Lord.  Students are reminded that God is the author and He is still writing His big story, which includes all of us.  As we help kids see that the bigger story has been lived out for thousands of years, they have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the wonder of it all; the great mystery of who God is and how He has chosen a part for each of us to play.

Another exciting component includes a opportunity and call for students to Respond each week to what they have heard, through both guided worship times, and Worship Response Stations. Children are encouraged to make space for the Holy Spirit and respond in a personal but communal way.  We desperately want to break away from creating robots who parrot Sunday school answers and make room for God to transforms little lives as they encounter His presence and power.

Each week ends with the Blessing.  The Small Group Shepherds send each child out with a blessing with the idea that they transition from being blessed to being a blessing to the world around them.  In big church, we call this the benediction.  Parent will be invited to join in this time of blessing when they pick up their children.

Finally, this curriculum comes with a huge family component.  We recognize that you as parents are your children’s primary spiritual teachers.  Since students, 1st-8th grade, will all be studying the same thing, you’ll have greater opportunities to talk as a family about what God is doing. Tru has designed a resource to help parents intentionally spend time in God’s Word with their children before coming to church each week.  It’s called the HOMEFRONT Weekly.  The HOMEFRONT is a weekly half sheet that will be sent home with your child each Sunday.  It is accompanied by a monthly HOMEFRONT magazine filled with suggestions for creating spiritually forming time in the home.  The monthly HOMEFRONT magazine will be available at the Spotlight Booth each month with reminders to pick it up in the bulletin.

A Celebration of Life

At the time this post is published, we as a Church Body will be celebrating the life of Tarrah Mead.

We are laying to rest a great friend.

Tarrah Mead went to join her Creator in heaven on Sunday, August 21st 2011.  Tarrah has been a part of Prime Time via Arts Camp almost from the beginning.  She was a wonderful shepherd and more recently, an awesome teacher, plus spent time as a HML –hand motion lady, an actress (who could forget “Hey, Bail!”), and did most anything else asked of her.  She represented all that was great about Arts Camp and Prime Time Children’s Ministries.  We can’t imagine doing ministry without Tarrah.

She will be missed so much, but what a celebration she must be enjoying in heaven.

Faith not Fear.
